One of the best long passer ever, and a solid defender at heart. Jerome Boateng was reaching the peak of his career at the 2014 world cup, giving some great performances, particularly at the final in which he truly deserved the man of the match award. He was physically imposing, and has great athleticism, making him a formidable opponent in one-on-one situation. His partnership with Hummels at the back gives defensive assurance for the Germans, as they were only conceded 4 goals throughout the tournament. In terms of pure defending ability and reading of the game, Boateng himself was never reaching elite level. In fact he was well below Hummels in terms of pure defensive capabilities. It was his amazing long passes that made him a special player, which almost have the same quality as the likes of Pirlo or Xabi Alonso.
