What attribute that define the ultimate defender? Is it the ability to read the game, anticipation, aggressiveness, great aerial prowess or ball playing skills? Yes, it certainly all of those things isn't it. Yet despite having all of it, Ramos was never a great defender. He's a great player of course, but NEVER a great defender. Why is this? Well because he lacks defensive qualities. Let me explain.
Don't be fooled by where he plays at, because as CB, Ramos was not really a CB. He's part of the team, who has the job to eliminate danger whenever it happens, but not necessarily by being a good center half, at least in a conventional way. Because he has incredible physical prowess and athleticism, he would rather use those qualities than utilizing his reading of the game. He's always the reactive player, because really, his physicality is good enough for him that he doesn't mind to not anticipate danger before it happens. This reactiveness made him look reckless and risky, and judging by the amounts of red cards that he received, it's all true. Plus, he also has no regards to defensive structure and team work, which is worrying. So, what is this player? Well to be honest, he's still more than a decent footballer too. Despite all those weakness, he still has a lot to offer as a defender other than those horrendous reading of the game, by being a good leader and footballer. He has those winning mentality that were on elite level, and combine it with his incredible ability in the air, he could be a goal threat during set pieces. This makes him a great asset to Real, and simply suited their way of playing. At the end of the day, football is about finding the right chemistry within the team, and Ramos is the one who helps build that chemistry, by giving extra spirit to the others. And, by being who he is, whatever type of player he is.
